Julie Hammerquist ARTIST
Two of my passions in life are art
and boating. I became involved in both at an early age. Growing
up on Day Island in Tacoma, WA., boating was a big part of our
family life. Our family first made trips to the San Juan Islands
when I was 3. At this age I also began to draw. At 10, I was
painting with oils. Now I use acrylics in a watercolor style for my boat portraits. I
have never stopped being passionate about either art or boating.
When out cruising in our 33' Bayliner "Shortcake",
I reach for my sketch pad instead of a fishing rod.
My other work is inspired by my travels abroad and nature. I visited many museums and enjoyed learning about different cultures while living in Europe. My memories of our travels were brought home home in the form of sketches. I also love exploring color and form in my paintings of flowers. For these expressions art, I enjoy a looser style of painting with watercolor or soft pastels.
I have found a new passion in teaching art to all ages. "It is so exciting and rewarding to see the artist emerge in everyone, regardless of age. I truly enjoy sharing my love of art and skills with children." I find it so rewarding to turn an "I can't do it" into a big smile of pride and accomplishment. Working with my students, I find myself exploring new techniques and having an even greater appreciation of art in all forms.
